Sir Richard Branson’s first entrepreneurial career started out with breeding budgerigars and selling Christmas cards at age 11. At age 16 he started his first venture, Student Magazine which was the stepping stone for Virgin Records—the company that will launch his name as one of the most brilliant entrepreneurs worldwide.
But it’s not just his business ventures and publicity stunts that make him well known. What sets Branson apart from the rest of the big names in the business is his personality and approach not just towards large or small business management but also to life.
Here are 10 lessons you can learn from Branson’s personality that we can apply to our own lives to make us a better person:
- Listen to others. Branson may be the head of Virgin group but he values his employees and listens to what other people have to say. Building a great relationship and following advice from the people around you can help you do better.
- Don’t be afraid to be creative. Virgin Airlines, Virgin Cola, Virgin Records, Virgin Galactic—none of them would have taken off without a little bit of creativity.
- The word “can’t” shouldn’t be in your vocabulary. To quote Branson, “the word shouldn’t stop you.” It should motivate you to strive more to reach your goal, to prove to yourself more than others that this particular task is achievable in one way or another.
- Take the opportunity, it’s always worth the try. That’s how Branson managed to get his own private island.
- Have a certain disregard for the rules, but make sure you’re doing it to reach your goals more efficiently. As Branson said, “If you don’t have the right experience to reach your goal, go in another direction, look for a different way in.”
- Share your stories with others. Tell people what you have experienced or share something that might interest them—it’s a step in inspiring them and being an example.
- Do what you love. Be passionate about it. What drives you to do something brilliantly? It’s passion.
- Age is never an issue. Branson was already an entrepreneur even before he understood the meaning of the word. It’s never too late to start a business or to get back control of your life.
- Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes are good, it helps us to learn and grow.
- Last but not the least, don’t forget to have fun. While you want to achieve success, it shouldn’t always be about the serious things. Have fun and live your life to the fullest so that you can be at your happiest. You can use these tips to create and grow your own business and personal goals – screw it, just do it!
