That was 2003, and my first real lesson in leadership. Average age 18. Average tenure 3 years, twice the industry norm. They taught me more about loyalty than any leadership book.
Since then I’ve spent 25+ years helping founders across Australia and New Zealand, from single businesses to multi-site regions. Since 2015 I’ve coached business owners one-on-one, including franchises, trades and construction owners turning over $2M to $5M.
The pattern I see most isn’t a skill problem. It’s a belief nobody has examined.
“I don’t have time.”
“My team can’t do it as well as I do.”
“If I work less, the business won’t grow.”
Different words, same story: it has to be me, or it all falls apart. That’s a control problem dressed up as a capability problem.
My job is to help you see that story, own it, and change what happens next. Direct conversations, real accountability, no fluff. The growth of the business owner is the growth of the business.
My dad was a Uruguayan immigrant who worked 16 to 18 hour days picking fruit and built a life from nothing. His advice was simple: keep going. I coach the same way.
