  2. Help them define what’s okay, and what’s not. In this step, it’s crucial for clients to get specific about behaviours or patterns that make them feel uncomfortable. Help them to write these boundaries out clearly.
  3. Using these clearly defined boundaries above, the next step is to help them work out what a healthy dynamic looks like to them. For example, if they’re being made to feel taken advantage of by a family member, what would have to change in order for them to feel valued and understood.
  4. And finally, the key to setting positive boundaries is to communicate these kindly and effectively. Setting boundaries isn’t about creating conflict. It’s about being able to communicate your needs with confidence and compassion.
    For example, expressing needs might sound like: “I really value our relationship, but I need to be honest about what’s been affecting me.”
  5. Reinforce and review. Setting boundaries is a process, so it’s important to continue reinforcing them without guilt. Help clients check in with themselves, and in case of any setbacks, it’s good to remind them why boundaries are so important.
